I've been trying to raise awareness about remote working for about 5 years.
I have participated in meetings, talks, webinars and events commenting on this as I believe it is the future of
work, especially in the IT sector (in Argentina it's very "green", inmature).
I'm working on projects to raise awareness, encourage and specialize teams in this modality.
About 15 years ago, when I was experimenting with an overseas project and developing a software product
for IP surveillance cameras, I got that futuristic curiosity about how things were progressing
and started thinking about people working from far away, robots shopping for us at the supermarket
or bringing us things to where we are and everything related to that future
that surely Ray Bradbury or Isaac Asimov will have influenced my mind.
Since I moved away from the noise and chaos of the capital city, I understood more deeply
that the future of work should be accommodated in this way.
But the idea of this post is not to talk about me, let's concentrate on why you have to be prepared for remote work
Technology
Today technology has reached a fairly mature collaborative point where you can work, share ideas, take
decisions and communicate from anywhere on the planet at any time. This has made it easier for
our daily, personal, family and home life is adapted to work and vice versa.
The work tools already have collaborative online and mobile versions and can be used from any platform.
Coordination between time zones is also becoming possible.
Employee
Today, workers must not only have the skills to perform a specific task, but they must also have communication skills, the use of work technologies and the ability to interact in a group, coordinate work, adapt to continuous change and have sufficient empathy to be able to lead or adapt to the dynamics of the working groups
Society
Today the family is not usually the traditional one we all know. Friends, our relatives and family group have adapted to a new daily dynamic, where we have more interaction, communication and more personal and social activities than 20 years ago. Society has turned to a massive consumption of products and entertainment that did not exist before. Personal and social priorities have changed. The virtual world encourages virtual interaction and has adapted people to be able to perform it form on the job.
Companies
Job generators have understood that today workers do not need to be in front of a screen all
the time, warming the seat and watching the monitor.
Ways to build trust, work towards goals, be flexible with personal life and technology teams,
globalization and travel, have caused companies to start allowing
workers communicate from where it is best and perform tasks related to their work
from the most convenient location.
Internet
Today the Internet allows even a monetary transaction to be carried out in the second it is executed. Internet access has made it possible to connect and unite people who were previously very difficult to get to know each other or establish a relationship, either at work or at home. The Internet has encouraged communication and work throughout the world. It is the fundamental means of remote work.
Labor Independence
In addition to all the points that I have mentioned, today the worker has an independence that he did not have before.
His work has been made more flexible and he is allowed to evolve along with all types of work
at a pace that has never happened before. That independence allows you to choose what to work on and where to specialize.
The new jobs of the future that are not yet known exactly what they will be, but if it is known that all that
is repetitive, to carry out orders, data management and particularly specialized, will be assigned to the
automation and robots.
Anything that does not enter this group will be precarious or will be the work that no one wants to do.
Education
Education in the world is changing, it is adapting to the jobs of the future.
A root-and-branch change must be generated in education to adapt it to the coming world. The working class
half of it will go to the automation and robots. Those that do not adapt or perform work that is not
specialized will enter the precarization, it will be the work that nobody will want to do. Those who specialize and
will be the ones who program the machines and give orders to the robots.
World Order
The companies that lead the world are already creating remote jobs. It makes it easier for them to specialize in the work, have the best resources and manage costs. It also allows the globalization of business and worldwide standardization. Giants like Microsoft and Google already do.
Goverment and State
There are already countries in Europe legislating on this.
Transport
In the bigger cities, moving from home to work nowadays is chaotic. The public services cannot cope with the volume of people to transport them in a short time. Using personal means of transport is not suitable for short journeys. Remote working allows you to gain daily hours of both work and personal life.
Health
Earning hours a day to organize our lives improves our health and allows us to spend more time with our loved ones and reduce stress.
